Why the Hyperloop is Only for Medium-Distance Travel

Once the kinks are worked out - the Hyperloop is slated to be a viable method of transportation. However, there are limitations for the fifth-mode of transportation.

Elon Musk’s design proposal for the Hyperloop was matched to the trip between San Francisco to Los Angeles, a distance of 380 miles. With a distance like that, it makes a lot of sense. It is a pain to travel by car from San Fran to LA and flying is not an affordable proposition. Therefore a transportation method like the Hyperloop makes sense as there is a distance and the Hyperloop can achieve its effectiveness by utilizing its top speed for the majority of the journey.
That is where the limitation is. A shorter route (like LA to Palm Springs) would not work as the route is short enough that travelling by car would be better and the Hyperloop would be operating at a relative loss for a longer duration of time. The times of embarkment and disembarkment are the same times as the ride itself, which defeats the purpose in a way.
Longer-distance routes have one major problem, infrastructure cost. The cost of infrastructure is too large for the Hyperloop to be profitable or even recuperate the initial costs. The Hyperloops speed over a long distance (like LA to NYC) makes it less useful given that there will need to be many stops to even break even profitability-wise.

Even though the Hyperloop is only best for medium-distance routes, it still has a big potential. The medium-distance travel options are quite inefficient and the Hyperloop can finally fill that gap.
